Video Dating Online in 2008

So, the web has it’s fair share of, uhum, naughty websites.

Wanting to actually get married someday I reviewed and tested 3 new dating web 2.0 start-ups.

WooMe.com

Woome - Video speed dating in 60 seconds. If you’re shy about social interaction, this honestly is a great place to practice your skills. If things go wrong…she doesn’t know you or your number. If you like the girl, you’ve got 60 seconds to make a good impression!

Great concept, I hope more and more users get on this site. I’ll be on here practicing my skills for sure. In my first session I met a nice girl from Hawaii…though she was 18. Um, yeah, that’s a little to close to jailbait for me.

Woome has “sessions” that currently 3 men and 3 women can join at one time. You can see the upcoming sessions and invite users to a session you create yourself. About 50 seconds before the session you’ve decided to join an AJAX screen pops up to alert you to get ready. Some cheesy bad music starts playing. You then get 60 seconds with three different girls. 60 is a really short time to make an impression!

After the session you are forced to choose at least one person to “woo”. That’s definitly one thing I didn’t like about the site….what if I don’t want to “woo” anyone in the session?

Also, I noticed the same users going on back to back sessions. This site also seemed to have a number of nice looking men….but not so much on the women side! I’ll check back in a few months and see how it’s doing.

I did find one or two interesting girls whom I might invite to a session, chances are slim they will accept. But, you never know!

Speeddate.com

SpeedDate - SpeedDate gets you right into the action. Before I knew it I had person typing away at me and I could see her picture. Ummm, she wasn’t the best looker in the world, but it was a good first SpeedDate. Really, you need to be prepared to jump right in, once you confirm your camera, it starts your first 3 minute date.

The site gives you the option to “crush” a member. Once that happens an e-mail gets sent to that member and I assume you then get connected for a speed date if the other party agrees. If you wanted to go hog wild “crushing” members, you could probably accumulate a good amount of speed dates. Just make sure your profile is bomb.

I actually met some nice people on SpeedDate. None that I would likely date, but I did manage three mutual “crushes”. One drunken girl even proclaimed, “You’re cute. I’d totally do you”. Um, needless to say, I didn’t crush her back, but I was flattered (even if she was drunk).

SpeedDate is my pick for the best of breed in video dating. Like the other two, it’s still lacking significant numbers, but I’ll be watching this site and participating in the next few months.

SayHeyHey.com

SayHeyHey - This was also the least impressive site I reviewed. I couldn’t find a single Seattle member near me in age, and Christians? Yeah, not so much. SayHeyHey is an interesting thought, but not nearly as much fun as SpeedDate or Woomee. Also, the site kept crashing my FireFox browser for some reason. Also, the video I created when I signed up did not get saved on the site. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Best New Video Dating Site?

SpeedDate - Easy to use, 3 minute dates, lots of new members joining. I like the WooMe concept, but they really need more women to get my attention.

Did I miss one?

  1. Contrary to what you wrote, woome doesn’t force you to choose anyone at the end of the session. They have a huge “no, thanks” button to indicate your displeasure with that girl who just proposed after 45seconds.

  2. i actually thought it was the other way around… a ton of cute girls, just a few guy hotties. although, i’m sure the numbers will even out with time as site gets hoppin with more and more users.

countdown music, not my all-time fav, but definitely a fun experience..

  3. love these online dating sites! you meet people from literally all over the entire world!

  4. Trying these sites out, especially woome, has been so much fun. I’m not exactly looking for romance, but it’s still a fun way to meet interesting people. Plus, if you make a fool out of yourself, you’ll never have to talk to the person after 30 seconds! A few seconds later, you just move on and start on a clean slate.

If only real life were that easy :)

  5. I think videos are a more ‘honest’ form of online dating. It prevents women (and sure, men too) from taking just ‘good pictures’. People will get to a know a lot about others just through video dating.

  6. of all the websites, i like woome the best. woome has a great design and able to see people while u talk to them. while the other sites arent as popular and have less ppl to talk to.
